I needed some good Golf Instruction the first time I played Golf.
The first time I played the game was at about the age of 40. I have been very athletic all my life playing baseball and basketball in high school and college. I bowled on several leagues with old school friends and played handball often. But I never thought of Golf as a very athletic game.
My bowling buddies and I traveled to a bowling tournament in another state and most of them, being advid golfers, suggested that we play golf between bowling matches. Two of us had never played the game before and said we would watch but were over ruled by the others and were forced to play.
Two sets of golf clubs were provided for us to use, both being clubs used by the wifes of the good players. We finished our first of three bowling matches early in the morning and proceeded to the golf course. It was a beautiful day and we were looking forward to enjoying the outdoors. The "game" of golf was not much fun! In fact it may have been the most frustrating five hours of my life.
The two of us that had never played were paired up with two of the better golfers so they could "help" us. Sounded good but there was a catch. Just as we were about to tee off the loud speaker ask if another golfer could join our two some. My partner said that we could not very well turn him down so we agreed.
He turned out to be the top college player in the nation from Arizona State. He Was Good! Of course this caused the competitive nature of by Bowling buddy to surface, I was left to fend for myself.
People on the course were ducking and running for cover every time I tee'd off,I lost all the balls in my bag and most of those in my buddies bag. It took me so much time to finish one hole that everyone on the course was mad and of course it didn't do my temper any good.
We were scheduled to bowl in the next round of the tournament about in the afternoon and again at 9, but by 5 we were no where near finished on the golf course and had to leave making the good golfers in our group very upset. We didn't do very well in the bowling tournament that evening and the trip home was very "cool".
Moral of the Story. Golf is a game that must be approached with knowledge, appreciation and respect. Never, never approach the game unprepared. Even the best golfers prepare themselves before playing golf with the right equipment, knowledge of the game and all the patience they can muster.
